Bear hunting with QC Copper and Gold

Investors dream of making an investment that goes up in value 10x or more. Some call it a unicorn. I call it a bear. And bear hunting is what the DTM5 does.

I know what you’re thinking. It isn’t rational or intelligent to think that this is possible. DTM, I thought you were a serious investor? Hear me out.

When an ambitious entrepreneur starts her own company, what does she dream of? Perhaps financial independence. Doing social good. Creating opportunity for employment. Yachts. Security. Could be anything. But one thing is certain. Entrepreneurs do not start a business, invest their capital, take risk, have sleepless nights, struggle and fight……to make 7% on their money. No. They to it to make Many multiples, many times over, of whatever they put into the venture.

A simple example. Say an entrepreneur starts a business. Say it costs them $100,000 to get it going. Is their expectation to make $7000 a year…..or $75,000? Say an entrepreneur patents a new type of technology and want to commercialize it. They have $250,000 invested in the project. Do they want to make $17,500 a year on it? No. They want to make millions.

But wait – I know what you’re thinking. You can’t do it. If it were easy, everyone would do it. Or at least try!

Well who said anything was easy?

My point is, things are possible. They have risk. They have uncertainty. They require skill. And Luck. Building a business takes intelligence, fortitude, and tons of work. But it gets done. And people make a lot of money. Many fail. This is the way.

When DTM goes looking for an opportunity, the dream is alive. I’m hunting for bear. I want to win big. At its heart, the DTM5 is a venture fund type strategy where we want the opportunity to make multiples on an investment. It certainly won’t always work out. But you gotta start with the dream. Otherwise, why bother?

And remember – The basis of the DTM5 is to determine the merit (credibility) of a company and its management and identify intrinsic leverage (increased upside potential). Merit is the Risk control / Minimization. Intrinsic Leverage is a driver of the upside. Hmmmmm……less risk, more upside. Sounds appealing doesn’t it?

For more on merit and leverage check out my post ‘What makes the DTM5 Unique’ https://dtm5.com/2020/12/13/what-makes-the-dtm5-unique/

Which brings me to another DTM5 holding. QC Copper and Gold. (TSX.V: QCCU). Is it a 10 bagger? Probably not. But does it fit the criteria of a potential multi bagger? Lets have a look.

QCCU is part of the Ore group of companies headed by Stephan Stewart. QCCU owns a land package in the province of Quebec and the premise of the company is to create value for shareholders by

*from their December Investor Presentation

✓ Focusing on low risk/underappreciated assets in top mining districts
✓ Acquiring assets at low valuation during cyclical low points
✓ Expanding an economic resource to scale
✓ De-risking development towards a production decision

In a nutshell, they’ve put together a package of previously explored and / or mined properties, targeting Copper and to a lesser extent gold, and are re-engineering the potential development economics by 1) further research and analysis of the properties, supported by improved technology and far more detailed exploration. Ideally this will more accurately determine / reveal the resource base with an aim to prove up the viability of an open pit mining structure. This venture becomes particularly interesting in light of the macro trend in base metal prices (DTM’s Leverage!).

The company has done a smart job at financing itself, and like its kissing cousin Orefinders Resources, has been managed with integrity and respect for the shareholder. No signs of monkey business.

There is a kicker as well. Stephan Stewart loves to incubate / finance companies with other companies. It can really work. To that end, QCCU owns about 1/3 of Baselode Energy, which is a Uranium explorer operating in Saskatchewan (TSX.V: FIND). Baselode is an interesting opportunity in its own right, for reasons similar to QCCU. It serves as both a potential win for QCCU, and also as some diversification for shareholders of QCCU. FIND is on the bench of the DTM5 on its own merit. Not in the strategy directly at this point. But I’m happy to have some exposure to it via QCCU.

So….If copper stays in a strong bull cycle……and there is every indication it will…… If the economics of the property package prove up…….If management avoids unnecessary dilution and maintains its smart decision making, we really have something here. And If FIND is successful as well……..Fingers crossed!

Hey – Thats a lot of ‘IFs’. I’m not saying this is going to work. And if it does it will take time. Do your own due diligence! But I’m invested in QCCU (currently 21% of the DTM5 Strategy) , watching it like a hawk and hoping it will be a multi-bagger.

GLTA!

  1. Some early stage companies in your DTM5 portfolio. Do you expect they have the cash and wherewithal to have a reasonable expectation of being capable of seeing themselves through turbulent times if the bull market runs over a cliff? Or does your crystal ball see that just as a fantastic buying opportunity?

    1. Early stage co’s in the DTM5 have to have a strong balance sheet – specifically enough capital to get them to the next stage of their plan without having to raise money under poor conditions. Hard to say if a major correction would be a buying opportunity…..At this point, I’d say yes. But my opinion is subject to change!

  4. […] As I noted in a recent update, I’m not a Junior Resource Gold Explorer Kinda investor. But, I do know opportunity when I see it….. and I think QCCU offers a very attractive risk / reward profile, for reasons I first noted in my post on February 12. https://dtm5com.wordpress.com/2021/02/12/bear-hunting-with-qc-copper-and-gold/ […]
